19 Anime You Must See

by Jason

I realize I’ve been doing a lot of manga reviews lately. So I thought I’d give you a break and do something different today. This is a list of anime that I love. They’re listed alphabetically, more or less. I don’t think I could list them based on how good they are. If I tried to do that, the list would change every day. I’m sure everyone would have a different list. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

Anime List

  • Azumanga Daioh
Sweet and funny with wonderful characters.

  • Bleach
It’s like an animated supernatural samurai movie.

  • City Hunter
Great action with deep characters. City Hunter has some good humor too.

  • Chobits
I like the manga better, but the anime was fairly true to it. Anything by CLAMP is worth checking out.

  • Cowboy Bebop
Great sci-fi western with lots of action and deep story.

  • Excel Saga
The best anime parody of anime ever.

  • FLCL
    Bizzare and cool.

  • Fullmetal Alchemist
Vic is right, this story can be summed up in one word. Sacrifice.

  • Genshiken
Great look at Otaku. I just can’t figure out which one I’m most like.

  • Grave of the Fireflies
Don’t watch it unless you have something funny to follow it. It’s sweet, but very very sad.

  • Gunslinger Girl
Beautiful art and a moving story.

  • Happy Lesson
Sweet story with some great humor.

  • Hellsing
A great action horror anime. Very very cool.

  • Love Hina
Another one where the manga is better. Some big changes made to the anime. It’s still good though.

  • Lucky Star
Very little action, but very funny. The opening theme is addictive.

  • Manabi Straight
Sweet story with some good humor. The character design bugs me though. They graduate high school looking like they should be in pre school.

  • Project A-Ko
Several versions of this one. I like ‘em all though.

  • Read or Die
I saw the TV show before seeing the movie. The movie is supposed to be first I believe. I liked watching it backwards, it had more surprises that way.

  • Witch Hunter Robin
Beautiful art and a pretty good story. If you drink coffee, you will want an espresso drink very badly when watching this show.

I’m sure there are some I’m forgetting. Anytime someone asks me for recommendations there are always a few that slip through the cracks.

What’s on your list? I love to find new favorites to add to mine.

I was wondering if you’ve already made a review for Detective Conan aka Case Closed… I so love that anime….:)

  2. Jason Says:

No I haven’t reviewed that one yet. I really should, I love that show.

I’ll see if I can find somewhere to rent the first couple of DVDs and give it a thorough review for you.

  3. Emma Says:

I love Azumanga Daioh! And Witch Hunter Robin is great, too. I’ll have to check out some of the others! :)

  4. Emma Says:

Oh, right - and Cowboy Bebop is one of the best! OK, that’s my last comment. ;)

  5. AC Says:

Just my 2c - but here are my favorites (in no particular order)
    1) Rurouni Kenshin
    2) Inu Yasha
    3) Detective Academy Q
    4) Get Backers
    5) Tsubasa Chronicles
I just wish they would end the anime runs better - most times they just keep things hanging :(

  6. AC Says:

Dang! I forgot to add Mushi-Shi!

  7. Jason Says:

There is always something you think of later. *L*

  8. Amber Says:

I loved the Azamanga Daioh mangas and from what I’ve seen of Bleach and Cowboy Bebop I’ve really liked. FMA and Graveyard of the Fireflies are also high on my list, but my absolute favorite is Chrno Crusade. It’s very sweet, with lots of humor mixed in. As the series goes on though, it gets dark fast. Another one I liked was DNAngel and Trigun.

Thanks for the list; I’ll have to check those anime’s out.

  9. Amber Says:

Ohhh, Mushi-Shi is a good series so far too AC. I forgot that one to my list too.

  10. Jason Says:

    Thanks for the recommendations Amber.

I’ve only seen a tiny bit of Chrono Crusade, not even a full episode. It looked pretty cool, but I had no idea what was going on.

I’ve heard great things about D.N.Angel and Mushi-Shi too, but I don’t think I’ve seen any of those at all.

Guess I have to start lookin’ for ‘em. *L*

  11. tecenda Says:

I disagree with Lucky Star and Manabi Straight as must sees. Those are more like recent fads.

In their place, I would recommend:
    -Najica Blitz Tactics
(Guiness World Record holder for most upskirt shots in a television series)
    -Neon Genesis Evangelion
(GAINAX’s revolutionary mecha anime that spawned a genre of serious introspective robot shows and caused the industry to triple in size a decade later)

  12. Jason Says:

tecenda, That’s cool. Not everyone likes the same thing.

I included Lucky Star because I love the humor.

Manabi Straight is on the list because I thought the bonds of friendship formed by the girls set an excellent example.

I won’t hold it against you for disagreeing with my choices. I’m just surprised there hasn’t been more disagreement. *L*

  13. demonslayer Says:

all of the above+naruto+ghost in the shell+Slam Dunk ^-^

  14. Amber-Leigh Says:

    Inuyasha *Loves It

Chobits *I enjoyed this one soo much manga and anime

    Spirited Away *very touching

Howels Moving Castle * Great Movie

pet shop of horrors *Short and Creepy Loved it

I would really like to watch any recommended anime
shows or movies that you would suggest
personally to me the older animes have such
a strong story to them and you really get into it.
the newer ones are great also but you can
    never beat the classics.

  15. Jason Says:

Some great choices, I love seeing other people picks.

@demonslayer: I love Naruto and G.i.t.S.. I haven’t seen any Slam Dunk anime, but the manga looks pretty interesting for basketball fans.

@Amber-Leigh: I haven’t seen the Vampire Knight anime, but I have read some of the manga. Perfect Blue is one of the best psychological thrillers in anime.

Thanks for suggesting those. I’ll see if I can find the ones that I haven’t seen.

  16. Tasha Says:

There are so many fantastic animes listed here, but i must admit i am sadend to see that my two all time favorites, Fushigi Yuugi & Ceres: Celestial Legand. Other animes i have also enjoyed include .Hack//sign, Kiddy Grade, Rorouni Kenshin, X, Princess Mononoke and so many more.
