Hellsing Manga Volume 2

Friday, October 31st, 2008

Hellsing seems like a good way to end Vampire Super Extended Happy Bloodsucker Week. I still have a couple of vampire manga to review, but I’m gonna let Vampire Week die without them. When you see ‘em they’ll be regular reviews.

Story

It seems that the Hellsing Agency’s enemies are gearing up for something. Something so big that they’re willing to attack Hellsing head on in their own headquarters. Everyone has to do their part in this battle. Even Walter, the Hellsing family butler has to return to active duty and practice some old familiar skills.

The aftermath isn’t good. Hellsing lost a lot of manpower and gained only one small clue. A single word. Millennium.

My Opinion

I’d heard that the anime didn’t do justice to the Hellsing manga. I don’t really agree with a statement that strong, but I’m starting to see how an opinion ike that was formed. The manga really does have something that wasn’t captured by the attempts to animate it.

I like the anime, both of ‘em. I thought Hellsing was great before I read any of the manga. Now I think Hellsing is freakin’ awesome. There, I said it.

Solid, consistent, beautifully executed artwork combined with unbelievably cool characters in a story that hints at something huge beneath the surface. How could that not be freakin’ awesome?

Is it worth it?

It’s Hellsing. Of course it’s worth it. If you haven’t read it, then go buy this manga right now. Seriously, it’s that good.

I am ashamed that it’s taken me this long to get around to reading it.

Hellsing Manga Volume 1

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Story

The Hellsing Agency, part of the Order of Royal Protestant Knights, are charged with protecting Queen, Country and Church from the monsters that lurk in the dark. If the dead rise to torment the living, Hellsing will be there to lay them to rest, a final rest.

The Order and Agency have enemies, powerful enemies. Section XIII, Iscariot, the Vatican’s unofficial enforcement squad are at the top of the list.

My Opinion

I’ve talked about the Hellsing, as well as Hellsing Ultimate, anime. I haven’t talked about the Hellsing manga though, and I thought it was about time I got around to it.

If you’ve seen the anime versions then you’re aware of the stylish art which helps to give this vampire story a very cool edge. There differences in the art in the two versions of the anime, and those differences extend to the manga.

The art of Hellsing in it’s manga form shares certain similarities with both anime. For the most part it reminds me more of the first anime, but with frequent moments of stylishly exaggerated proportion that is a lot more common in the Ultimate anime. The manga version doesn’t have the super clean look of the Ultimate anime though, which I think is a point in it’s favor. There’s a roughness around the edges of the manga art that lend a sort of atmosphere to the story that it’s trying to tell.

Is it worth it?

If you like vampires and you like manga, then you have to read Hellsing. It’s a law or something. Besides, it is awesome.

Vampires with big boobs, bigger guns and more attitude than can be learned in one lifetime. What more could you want?

Vampire Week Extended

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

Yes, I know Vampire Week is supposed to be over now, and with a bonus even. Much like the fiendish creatures of the night themselves, Vampire Week cannot be so easily dispatched. I’ve decided to extend it until the end of October, so we can have a few more Vampire posts before November.

Why Extend It?

Simple, because I have more vampire manga to review. I got a chance to go manga shopping again yesterday and I wound up buying more vampire manga. I didn’t do it intentionally. I only realized I bought vampire manga after I’d made my selection. I didn’t want to put any back, so here we are.

Vampire Week is kind of at fault here. I liked a couple of the titles I reviewed last week enough that I wanted to buy more. So you can expect to see more of those after Vampire Week is over…again.

I’d better be careful though, or I’ll have nothing to review next year.

Ouran Update

If you haven’t entered the Ouran High School Host Club giveaway that I’m running, you’d better enter quickly. It’ll be ending on October 27th, 2008. After that I’ll be closing the comments and no more entries will be allowed.

The Big Prize is an Ouran High wall scroll signed by the English voice of Tamaki, Vic Mignogna. FUNimation has also agreed to provide some DVDs for the giveaway too. Even if you don’t win the Big Prize, you could get something cool. Besides, it’s free to enter. What do you have to lose?

Read the giveaway post for the rules and how to enter. Time is running out.

Moon Phase Anime Volume 1 DVD

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

Moon Phase Anime DVD Volume 1
I was gonna let the Hellsing post yesterday wrap up Vampire Week. That was the plan, but I got the Moon Phase Volume 1 DVD in the mail. It fits with the theme of the week, I just thought it was gonna be late. Thanks to the uncharacteristic quickness of my anime queue, you get a bonus Vampire Week post.

Story

Kouhei Morioka works hard on his dream of being a photographer, but he just can’t seem to make it. He has a knack for taking spirit photographs, pictures of ghosts and other unexplained phenomenon. It’s hard to be a pro photographer when all your pictures have weird crap in ‘em. Good thing he has a friend who does some work for occult magazines.

While working on a project in Germany he has a run in with a young Vampire. She intends to bite Kouhei and make him her slave, but things don’t quite work out as she planned. She does bite him, but the blood pact doesn’t work.

Frustrated but refusing to give up, she follows him back to Japan and moves in with him. Much to the delight of his grandfather who thinks she’s cute.

My Opinion

Moon Phase seems like it has a decent story. As long as it doesn’t crap out later on it should be pretty good.

From the cute and bizarre opening theme about nekomimi (cat ears), you’d expect a somewhat different show. Other than a bit of weirdness occasionally the story is kinda sweet. There isn’t nearly as much weirdness as the opening might suggest though. It just seems to be one of those things that makes you wonder what in the world they were thinking.

It looks like it could develop a pretty cool supernatural story line as well. Kouhei’s family seems to be psychically and mystically gifted. Except for Kouhei that is, he seems to have less spiritual awareness than a stone.

Extras

Clean opening and closing themes, trailers and character profiles. The usual stuff. Not much Extra or Special about it, though the character profiles are nice.

Is it worth it?

Rent this one first. It does have some odd moments. It didn’t bother me much, but I’m getting used to anime weirdness.

If you can get past that, then this anime has potential to be pretty good.

Hellsing VS Hellsing Ultimate

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Let me just say that the following is my opinion, you don’t have to agree with it.

Story

The Hellsing organization has been fighting monsters across Britain for generations. Using arcane knowledge, advanced military tactics and a very special secret weapon, Sir Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing continues her family’s legacy. Standing against the darkness that would overtake them given the slightest opportunity, the Hellsing organization is a beacon of hope, but they are not without enemies.

Into this secret war against the dark comes a young police girl. Recruited during an undead outbreak, Seras Victoria becomes a very special agent for Hellsing. Adjusting to her new position is difficult, and made even worse by her newfound Vampiric powers.

Seras Victoria was killed in the line of duty by Alucard. He’s Hellsing’s secret weapon, a vampire. As she lay dying he gave her a choice, die human or live as a vampire. She made her choice.

Comparing the Two

The Look

The art design in Hellsing is a bit closer to reality, though the color tends to be chosen with more of an eye to style and mood than to reality. It also has a bit more of a gritty and gloomy feeling to it. There are more wide shots, giving the viewer a chance to see Alucard in all his supercool glory.

Hellsing Ultimate has taken a more stylistic approach to both character design and shot composition. Character features tend to be a bit more exaggerated. The exaggeration extends to perspective and camera placement as well. Close ups are used often and with as much flair as everything else is done with in Hellsing Ultimate.

The Action
The story is the same, but how that story is told is what matters. The effects, the pacing and the dialog can all make a huge difference.

Hellsing tends to be a bit more subtle when it comes to the unfolding plot. A bit too subtle at times, leaving the audience wondering what exactly is going on. It’s like there is just one small piece of info that you’re missing.

Hellsing Ultimate isn’t as subtle. About anything. Watching the first DVD of Ultimate after you’ve seen the first anime series can sometimes leave you with the feeling that you’ve been hit over the had with plot points you had to find on your own in the first anime. The only way you’ll miss part of the plot with Hellsing Ultimate is if you fall asleep in front of the TV, and that isn’t likely with this anime.

The Winner is

The audience. Anime fans are the winners here. Both of these shows have their strengths and weaknesses. This one comes down to personal preference.

If you haven’t seen these anime, then you really need to see ‘em. Trying to decide which to watch first? This might help.

Hellsing is a vampire show with action.

Hellsing Ultimate is an action show with vampires.

That’s how it seems to me.

The Record of a Fallen Vampire Manga Volume 1

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Story

Long ago a Vampire Queen was sealed away when her power threatened to destroy the world. Her beloved King Akabara “Red Rose” Strauss seeks to break the seal and free her from her prison. There are a few problems standing in his way. There are thousands of fake seals scattered across the globe, and there’s no way to tell if a seal is real or a fake until it’s broken. Then there’s the Black Swan.

The Black Swan is a curse designed to destroy King Akabara Strauss before he can awaken his Queen. To do that the curse possesses a human girl, giving her the speed, power and abilities of all the girls possessed before her. Each Black Swan is stronger than the last.

Can the Red Rose find his Queen before the Black Swan is strong enough to destroy him?

My Opinion

The Record of a Fallen Vampire comes across as a tragic romance in the description, and to a certain degree it is, but most of Volume 1 is an action manga. The Vampire King is trying to hunt down and break the seals. The dhampires, half vampires (kinda like BloodRayne), are trying to stop him. That means fight scenes.

Then you add in The Slay-errrrr…. I mean Black Swan. A young girl granted speed and power by a mystic force, chosen to fight and kill the Vampire King. Even more fight scenes. So, while the description may sound sappy, the manga itself packs a lot of action.

Some of the character designs bugged me. Particularly the eyes, they seem way too wide. Other than that the art is decent. It flows very well. Sometimes it has a cinematic feel to the layout. I liked that, it helped me to ignore the eyes that bugged me so much.

Is it worth it?

I think so. Volume 1 of The Record of a Fallen Vampire really created a solid foundation for the story. The stage is set and I’m interested to see what will happen next. I’d recommend this manga to Joss Whedon fans interested in trying manga for the first time.

Rosario Vampire Manga Volume 2

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Rosario Vampire Manga Volume 2 CoverI decided to go ahead and write up the review for Volume 2 today instead of waiting. It’s a vampire story so it should be part of Vampire Week, right?

Story

Tsukune Aono’s group of friends at Yokai Academy continues to grow. Joining his little group this time around is Yukari Sendo. Yukari is only 11 years old, but she’s a genius, and she’s also a Witch. That causes some trouble to start with for the newspaper club, because witches aren’t exactly popular with monsters. Of course, it could be because she’s a brat that is always using her magic to pull pranks on everyone. Either way, she get’s ‘em in hot water.

My Opinion

Rosario Vampire is shaping up to be a pretty good harem manga. The characters being introduced are all distinct and well formed. Even the villains, both recurring and one-shot bad guys, have some depth.

The setting seems to be helping to make each character stand out as well. Since everyone except Tsukune is a monster, then everyone has something that sets them apart. Even if we don’t find out what kind of monster someone is for a while, they tend to behave with certain characteristics that act as clues, even in human form.

Is it worth it?

Rosario Vampire Volume 2 is worth it. It lives up to the quality of story and art set by Volume 1 and develops the character’s relationships further.

I’d recommend Rosario Vampire to anyone that likes harem manga. I’d also recommend it to people that want to read a manga that captures the fun of Halloween, if not the horror.

Rosario Vampire Manga Volume 1

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Rosario Vampire Manga Volume 1 Cover
I bought volumes 1 and 2 of Rosario Vampire at the same time. The review of volume 2 should be up soon.

Story

Tsukune Aono is a completely average guy in every way. Nothing special about him at all. Not until he goes to high school.

After failing all of his entrance exams Tsukune winds up going to a very strange school. He soon learns that he’s the only human attending this school. Yokai Academy is a school for monsters. The academy teaches them how to blend in with humans by making them act human. That’s the only thing keeping everyone from finding out Tsukene’s secret.

Things aren’t all bad though, Tsukune made a friend on his first day. Moka is the cutest girl in school and she just loves drinking Tsukune’s blood. Moka is a vampire, one of the strongest of monsters.

With a little help from his friends, Tsukune might live long enough to graduate.

My Opinion

Rosario Vampire is an interesting combination of humor, action and weird high school life. The story is cute and the visuals are a perfect fit.

The art of Rosario Vampire is solid and fitting for the story. Expressive and distinctive characters act out the story in some really cool horror movie settings. Yokai Academy has a really cool Halloween kind of feel to it. Which is appropriate since everyone is in costume.

Is it worth it?

Rosario Vampire is a pretty cool manga. It has cute girls, monsters and laughs. Sometimes all three at the same time. I’d recommend checking it out.

Vampire Doll Manga Volume 1

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Vampire Doll Manga Volume 1 Cover

Story

Over 100 years ago the Vampire Lord Guilt-Na-Zan was sealed away inside a cross because he couldn’t be destroyed. The dangerous mission was performed by an exorcist from the Yotobari family.

Now Guilt-Na-Zan is free once more… kind of. Released from the cross by a Yotobari descendant, Guilt-Na-Zan is now in the body of a little girl. Kyoji Yotobari released the powerful vampire to become his maid.

How can Guilt-Na-Zan-Chan release herself from this life of servitude and regain her full power permanently?

My Opinion

It seemed like there was too much going on when I read the back of the manga. A description filled with vampires, sex changes, transformations and banishment could go either way. It could be an awesome story or a chaotic and hopeless mess.

Lucky for the readers that Erika Kari handles everything very well in Vampire Doll. This is a comedy through and through. There are some softer moments, but most parts of the book are focused on amusement. Vampire Doll is filled with humorous moments, from a vampire that only has enough magic to conjure flowers and sweets to sibling squabbles.

The art is pretty cool. It’s filled with frilly Goth cloths and the pretty boys and girls you’d expect to see in a Vampire shojo. The detail and consistency combined with solid character design fill the pages with art that you want to spend some time with before turning the page.

Is it worth it?

Vampire Doll is a comedy manga well worth checking out. Lot’s of laughs and some great characters make this manga easy to recommend.

Vampire Week

I love Halloween (not to be confused with I Luv Halloween) , so I had to do something special. In that vein I’ll be reviewing Vampire anime and manga all week.

Vampires are pretty popular characters for any medium, and manga and anime are not exceptions. I was hoping to pick up a couple of vampire manga when I went to the bookstore. Imagine my surprise, and delight, when I found so many that I had to decide which ones to put back. It was a tough choice, but I think I made the right decision. I’m looking forward to writing the posts this week. I love Halloween.

So check back in all week to find some manga an anime that really sucks. Hopefully in the good way.

If you don’t see your favorite vampire manga or anime then let me know and I’ll try to write up a review for it as soon as I can.

Ouran High Giveaway

I just wanted to add a reminder that the deadline for the Ouran High Giveaway is coming up in a week. If you haven’t entered the giveaway, then sign up now. You don’t have much time left.

Seriously, it’s such a beautiful wall scroll I bought one for myself. On top of that it’s autographed by one of the stars of the English dub. And FUNimation has agreed to provide DVDs for the giveaway, so there’s more than the wall scroll up for grabs.

If I weren’t running the giveaway I’d be entering to win it.

Anime: Drawing A Revolution

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

This review isn’t about an anime, it’s about a show about anime. How meta is that? Starz did a special about anime called Anime: Drawing A Revolution as part of their Starz Inside series of specials. There is violence and the language get’s pretty rough, as well as a few scenes of nudity and even sex. Parents should check it out before letting their kids watch it.

There’s a lot of talk about The Matrix. A lot. That’s understandable since anime was a large influence on the movie. I would have liked it a bit better if the focus had been more on the anime that influenced it, rather than The Matrix itself. There were some great examples of the anime influence with scenes from The Matrix and Ghost in the Shell running side by side.

All in all it was pretty cool, but take what they say with a grain of salt. I spotted a few mistakes when watching it. That kinda bugged me because I no longer had much confidence in that information presented that I didn’t already know. It puts a damper on things when you’re wondering if they’re lying to you or not.

A Few Problems

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was listed as an anime. It’s not. It was created by two American guys sitting around brainstorming new comics and what they came up with is TMNT.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya was shown while the subject being discussed was Hentai. That’s a bit misleading. Haruhi is a little ecchi at times, but it’s not hentai. There is a difference.

The choice of guests seemed a bit odd to me. A lot of Hollywood types, some comic book folks and a few anime/manga personalities. I was wondering why some of those people were even on there.

Verdict

This would be great to show your friends that aren’t into anime as a way of explaining what it is and why it’s so darn cool. You’ll get a little bit of anime history, and a glimpse at a possible future, but it’s nothing really detailed. This is a Starz special, not a Ken Burns documentary.

Ouran Streamed Online Free

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008
Ouran High School Host Club.

Ouran High School Host Club.

FUNimation is streaming full episodes of Ouran High School Host Club, and several other anime titles, for free on their site. I think that’s great, for a couple of reasons. I’m all for streaming episodes. A few free episodes can help promote the series. Shoot, even streaming the entire run of a show can give it a boost if done correctly.

This also gives me the chance to share the show with you. Since they let you embed videos I’ve added the first 2 Ouran episodes to this post. You can see the show and decide for yourself how the English dub turned out. You already know my opinion of it.

Oh, and don’t forget to enter the Ouran giveaway that I’m running.

The first 2 English episodes of Ouran High School Host Club are after the break. Click through to watch.

Update: Looks like they’ve removed the embed option, but you can still watch Ouran High on the FUNimation site.

Speed Racer (Live Action)

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

While I enjoyed the live action Speed Racer movie, a few things bothered me. Part of it had to do with how the characters were treated. How anime, and it’s fans, were presented bothered me even more. Was it enough to ruin the movie for me though?

Story

Speed has always been in love with racing. He was born for it. His older brother Rex was the best driver in the world and Speed idolized him. After a family tragedy Speed tried to live up to his brother’s legacy, but that may be more difficult than he’d ever imagined.

Can Speed follow in Rex’s footsteps? Would he want to follow him into a world of corrupt sponsors and fixed races?

My Opinion

There are times during the movie where I’m amazed that it was so perfectly done. That perfection was not only in the races, but also during scenes involving the Racer family. Everyone in the movie did a wonderful job. Everyone, from Emile Hirsch as Speed, down to the racers who were only there to be bumped off the track. Matthew Fox was great as Batman… errr, I mean Racer X. I loved the appearance of Peter Fernandez as an announcer at the Thunderhead track. Awesome.

There’s a lot of great stuff in Speed Racer. That made some of the bad moments even worse.

There are at least 2 moments that are so completely out of character that I was shocked and violently thrown out of the movie. Addressing the most grave infraction, I know why it was done. Speed needed a line that made him sound like a badass. Coming from anyone else it would be a good line, but it’s out of character for Speed.

The other problem I had with the movie was somewhat less obvious, but far more insulting. Anime and it’s fans seemed to be portrayed in a skewed manner. It’s like the film makers weren’t concerned with anime itself, but with reinforcing misconceptions about anime.

All of that aside, I enjoyed the movie. I tried to view it the way I viewed the Speed Racer cartoon. It had a cool, but vague, story and lot’s of action with impossible driving. Sounds a lot like Speed Racer to me.

Extras

There are a couple of featurettes, and are pretty good, but that’s it. The Special Features are almost non-existent. Wait a couple of months and there will probably be a deluxe version with more extras.

Is it worth it?

It’s definitely worth renting. If you love it, or if you have to buy everything Speed Racer related, I’d recommend waiting a while to see if a version with better extras will be released.

Ode to Toonami

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

The post I wrote about Toonami’s sudden, and needless, cancelation has had a few comments posted. One of the comments came in through the contact form instead, but that wasn’t what really set it apart. The distinction was that this was in the form of a poem. (I think. I don’t know much about poetry.)

I asked for and received permission to post it here.

Thanks Raúl.

The End of Toonami?
by Raúl Gallego Jr.

To those who would listen
To those who would care
To those who truly understand the impact of Anime on our lives

I cry out, that you may hear my thoughts and give the gift of your
thoughts if you should wish…

I can stand the silent waiting no more.

My thoughts scream out to be written.

To be heard by ears and minds that understand…

What it is like to lose something treasured and loved.

I don’t know what is more maddening, the waiting for Cartoon Network
to fix their mistake or the sinking realization slowing setting in that
something great has been stolen from my very being…

The first Saturday after they stole away our Toonami, was absolutely
boring, especially since all Adult Swim aired was reruns.

There was no Naruto or any of the possible shows that Cartoon Net. could
have put on the air.

It’s hard to see Saturdays the same, much less look forward to them
when the list of Anime to watch is so short and lacks the variety of the
original whole.

I grew up with Toonami and through it discovered the joy and wonder of
Anime, if not for Toonami it’s very doubtful that I would know what anime
is.

I suffered from depression, and seeing the strength and courage of the
characters I saw on Toonami (and the still existing Adult Swim,) I found hope,
joy, laughter, and feeling; the feeling you get when something really deep
touches your heart, moves you.

I realized through Toonami (and Cartoon Network,) that anime is a good way
to vent stress, to unwind, and most of all to be inspired and uplifted by seeing
the human side of a characters’ struggles and their triumph.

It was Toonami that helped get me through my blue period.

In Toonami I found not only great entertainment, regardless of how the
show evolved over time, but also rich memories and exposure to the dreams and
inspirations of the wonderful animators and the studios behind them.

In Toonami I found hope: that the dreams of humanity could take form, the
blurring of the line, where art, concept, and reality became one fluid motion
and become something other than the deceitful manipulations of those who would
wage war, instead of peace.

In Toonami I found joy: for if only for a day, I could forget my problems
and dedicate myself completely to the trials and tribulations of characters,
that were without a doubt absolutely lovable; they became a part of all of us
who understand Anime.

But now…?

What is left?

What is left of our sanctuary?

What is left of our Toonami?

“Until the sun rises on a world without Toonami… We remain the
First and the Best.”

The sun has risen, Toonami is gone, and I find the future a very dark
place in it absence.

We can only hope that they see the error of their ways and relaunch it…

And so the question left is:

Do we have a voice?

Do we all stand together?

And maybe, just maybe bring Toonami back to the world…

Ideas thoughts, we need them…

Spread the word, share your ideas…

Maybe together they will hear our cry.

And we’ll have made a difference in the fate of such a noble show.

Thanks for listening, thanks for your time…

-Raúl Gallego Jr.
