Anime review: Hayate no Gotoku!

by

Lots of anime reviews this week. Today’s anime is Hayate no Gotoku! It’s a strange little show. Here’s a quick rundown of it.

Hayate Ayasaki is a hard working young man in a desperate situation. He supports his unemployed parents by lying about his age to get work. Unfortunately his boss found out about this. Hayate was fired for lying, and his paycheck was given to his parents. That’s bad news. His parents are extremely irresponsible, that’s why he was supporting them. Before he can get back home to get his pay, his parents have not only blown all the money they’ve run off! They do leave him a small present. All of their debt, the amount of which is close to 160 million yen.

Hayate and Nagi.

When he tries to kidnap her, she thinks he’s confessing his love and asking her out.

Barely escaping from some very shady debt collectors that his parents sold him to, Hayate comes up with a plan. He’ll kidnap a girl he met in the park. If it works he can pay off the debt. If it doesn’t work he’ll be arrested, and at least he’ll have somewhere to live if he’s in jail. The only problem with this is his target, Nagi Sanzenin. When he tries to kidnap her, she thinks he’s confessing his love and asking her out. Not only can he not kidnap Nagi, he winds up saving her from someone else who tries to abduct her to pay off debt. To thank him for rescuing her, Nagi decides to give him a job, as her butler. The weirdness continues back at the Sanzenin mansion. A continuing string of misunderstandings keep landing Hayate in hot water and the anime keeps getting stranger.

It looks like a fun show with some action. Nagi is very rich, so she’s a target. One of Hayate’s duties is to protect her, whether it’s from kidnappers, giant mechs or the occasional robot.

The animation is ok. There’s not anything really unique about the art, but it’s not bad.

I can’t see this becoming a huge hit, but it’s worth checking out a couple of episodes.
