Beck DVD Volume 1
I’ve posted about Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad before, in a more general way. I’ve added the DVDs to my rental list so I could do a more thorough review. The reason? There are a couple really. I like the anime and I think it deserves a more detailed review. My other reason is a bit more selfish. I’ve been drooling over the box set since I first laid eyes on it, and I wanted to check out the DVDs to see if they’re worth the price tag.
Story
Koyuki is kinda drifting through life. He has few interests, fewer friends and no idea where he’s going. All that changes thanks to a few unrelated incidents that put him on a path that he’d never considered, but seems to be destined for. The life a musician, and even better… a rock star.
My Opinion
Coming in at 5 episodes, the first disc is pretty good. That’s a decent middle of the road number for an anime DVD. It also has a couple of nice extras, though one seemed better suited for a later volume.
Extras.
There are the normal extras that you see on Anime DVDs. Textless opening and closing and trailers for other anime by FUNimation are here of course. There is also a commentary track for one of the episodes which was pretty interesting. All this is rounded out with a music video of a song from the anime, which is a real treat with this show, because the music is awesome.
My only problem with the extras was the music video. It seems a bit out of place considering the episodes on this disc don’t go far enough for you to hear the song in the show. I think it would have been better to include the Beat Crusaders video of the opening theme, which is different than the anime opening, and put this video on a later disc.
Is it worth it?
Beck is always worth it. I love this show for more than the music. The story is great, if a little slow to start.
You must check out Beck if you haven’t seen it already.
