June 2009 Giveaway

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

The Shugo Chara giveaway on Crunchyroll inspired me. I’m going to giveaway a membership myself. My giveaway is going to be a bit different from theirs. You don’t have to collect eggs for a start. This giveaway will only have 1 winner, but the prize is a bit bigger than a 1 month membership.

Add 2xKnight as a Buddy on Crunchyroll

How to enter

Entering the giveaway is easy.

Signup for Crunchyroll if you’re not a member already, even the free registration will do. Then just go to my Crunchyroll profile (2xKnight’s Profile) and add me as a buddy, then send me a message saying that you want to enter the giveaway.

That’s it.

At the beginning of next month (July 2009) I’ll pick someone at random from all the buddies that entered and they’ll win.

What can you win?

1 very lucky winner will receive a free 1 YEAR anime membership to Crunchyroll.

As soon as I pick a winner, I’ll go to their profile and buy them a 1 year anime membership.

Remember, the membership covers more than anime. You also get some great live action programming as well. In addition there’s ad free access to the forums and the rest of the site too.

I think this is a great prize. I love my membership and I think that whoever wins the giveaway will love theirs too. Plus I get to support Crunchyroll in the process.

Who can enter?

Anybody that can sign up for Crunchyroll. As far as I know that’s anyone, from anywhere around the world.

(Yes, another giveaway our friends down under can enter)

Deadline

11:59 pm Eastern, June 30th 2009

So add me as a buddy before the end of the month for your chance to win a free year of anime membership at Crunchyroll.

March 2009 Anime Drawing (Second Round)

Monday, April 20th, 2009

Scrapped Princess Volume 1 Limited Edition Box with Figure

No wonder anime seems to be having trouble lately. I can’t seem to give the stuff away. I have some good prizes here, but no one claimed ‘em.

That means three people got very lucky. They’ll have a chance to get one of the prizes.

Second Round Winners

Here are the names drawn in the second attempt to give away cool stuff. This is also the last attempt, if nobody claims the prizes this time, they’ll go in The Prize Vault to await another giveaway.

If you see your comment, please check your e-mail.

If you don’t respond to the e-mail I sent you by Wednesday May 6 2009, then you forfeit your prize.

Can an Aussie win if she pays postage? It’s such a cool prize.

Looks like it’s a good thing you asked about that Gillian. You got super-lucky. None of the original winners claimed their prize and your name came up last the second time around. I’m not so lucky, now I got to figure out postage to Oz.

Thanks

Thank you all for reading Anime Fans Online. I hope to bring you more cool anime, manga and fun. If you have any ideas for stuff you’d like to see, please let me know.

Keep checking back. I have another great giveaway in the works and something very special to go along with it. That will be coming soon.

While you’re waiting for that giveaway, check out some of the anime and manga reviews. You might find something great that you’ve missed.

New March Giveaway Drawing

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

You might remember the Anime Fans Online March 2009 Giveaway. I picked names at the beginning of April and sent off e-mails so the lucky commentators could claim their free stuff. One of the rules of the giveaway was that the people who had their names drawn needed to respond by April 18 2009, that’s a little over 2 weeks, or they would forfeit their prizes.

None of the winners replied by the deadline. That means all the stuff is still up for grabs. Limited and special edition anime DVDs as well as some grab bags of manga are still waiting to be sent out.

I’ll draw new names tomorrow, Monday April 20 2009, from the list of qualified entries. I saved the un-drawn slips, just in case. Looks like that was a darn good choice.

The new winners will have until Wednesday May 6 2009 to respond to the e-mail they’ll be sent.

Any prizes that are still unclaimed after May 6 2009 will go in The Prize Vault, to be given away at another time. (The Prize Vault is what I like to call the closet in the guest room/den/storage space.)

March 2009 Giveaway Winners

Scrapped Princess Volume 1 Pacifica Figure
There were some good comments posted in March. There were also some that were kind of odd. Either way, I enjoy reading ‘em. Feel free to share your thoughts when you visit Anime Fans Online.

Now that the month is over it’s time to announce which comments were lucky enough to be drawn as winners of the March ‘09 Anime Giveaway. I went through and made a list of the comments and printed it out. Then I cut up the list and drew three names at random.

Update April 19 2009: None of the winners replied to the e-mail by the deadline. For more information see the post announcing the second drawing.

Winning Comments

If your name was drawn, check your e-mail. You have to respond by April 18th to claim your prize.

Commented on Yen Plus Manga Magazine

Submitted on 2009/03/01 at 12:12pm
Thanks for reviewing this! I’d heard about Yen Plus a few months back and I’ve been pretty curious about it, but I just hadn’t looked into it. Your review told me everything I wanted to know.

I’ve never really read any of the manga mags like Shonen Jump, so I have no experience with reading manga in that format, though I’ve been wanting to try it out.

So after reading this post (and the one you linked to), I definitely want to check out Yen Plus asap! The variety of titles really appeals to me, and the price looks like a great deal for so much manga.

I thought for sure a manga mag would be kinda pricey (thinking about it now, I’m not sure why…), so I was surprised when you mentioned the price. 10$ isn’t bad at all! So yeah, looking forward to it. :)

E-mails have gone out to the winners.

Thanks For Commenting

If you didn’t win, don’t worry. I’m already working on another giveaway that I’ll be announcing soon.

Ouran High Giveaway Winners

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

I’d like to thank everyone who entered. I’d also like to thank those that helped spread the word about the giveaway and about Ouran High. This is a great anime that deserves to do well. I had to do at least a little something to get people talking about Ouran.

I also want to thank FUNimation for offering some DVDs for the giveaway, but mostly for bringing this wonderful anime, as well as others, over for all of us to enjoy. Last but not least, I want to thank Vic Mignogna for being nice enough to autograph the wall scroll for the giveaway.

Now that the thanks are out of the way we can get down to business. Here’s the list of people that need to check their e-mail. I need a response in 1 week, or I’ll have to find someone else to give free stuff to.

Wall Scroll Winner:

Meg! Oct 20th at 9:50 am

Congratulations Meg. I hope you’ll enjoy your wall scroll as much as I like mine. It’s pretty big, so I hope you’ve got somewhere nice to hang it.

Wish I had enough scrolls to give everyone, but here are the lucky few that will receive a DVD from FUNimation.

Meiitzu! Sept 11th at 4:30 pm (Unclaimed Prize see Update)

Lauren! Sept 21st at 11:46 am

One more big Thank You to everyone who entered. I hope all of you will keep coming back to Anime Fans Online, and not just for the free stuff.

Vampire Week and Other Site News

Vampire Week

I love Halloween (not to be confused with I Luv Halloween) , so I had to do something special. In that vein I’ll be reviewing Vampire anime and manga all week.

Vampires are pretty popular characters for any medium, and manga and anime are not exceptions. I was hoping to pick up a couple of vampire manga when I went to the bookstore. Imagine my surprise, and delight, when I found so many that I had to decide which ones to put back. It was a tough choice, but I think I made the right decision. I’m looking forward to writing the posts this week. I love Halloween.

So check back in all week to find some manga an anime that really sucks. Hopefully in the good way.

If you don’t see your favorite vampire manga or anime then let me know and I’ll try to write up a review for it as soon as I can.

Ouran High Giveaway

I just wanted to add a reminder that the deadline for the Ouran High Giveaway is coming up in a week. If you haven’t entered the giveaway, then sign up now. You don’t have much time left.

Seriously, it’s such a beautiful wall scroll I bought one for myself. On top of that it’s autographed by one of the stars of the English dub. And FUNimation has agreed to provide DVDs for the giveaway, so there’s more than the wall scroll up for grabs.

If I weren’t running the giveaway I’d be entering to win it.

Ouran Giveaway Update

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

There’s a little less than a month left. The giveaway is doing well and people continue to enter. Things are going well and are only getting better.

I have some great news about the Ouran High School Host Club giveaway. If you don’t win the wall scroll, you still have a chance to come away a winner, thanks to FUNimation, who has agreed to contribute DVDs for prizes.

I want to thank FUNimation, and Jackie in particular, for being so kind. I was very nervous about sending e-mails asking for free stuff for other people. That kind of thing isn’t easy, not for me anyway. I try to do what I can for my friends at AFO, even if that includes begging for free stuff.

Once again, thank you FUNimation for being a part of the giveaway, and for bringing us great anime like Ouran High School Host Club.

About the Giveaway

If you haven’t entered, you still have time. The contest runs until October 27, 2008 at midnight. (E.S.T.) The drawing will be on October 28th 2008, the day that Ouran High School Host Club is scheduled to be released in North America.

Just visit the giveaway post, read the rules and leave a comment to enter. It’s that simple.

Just make sure to use a real e-mail address. If you win and you can’t be reached, then you’ll forfeit and someone else will get your prize.

Mark your Calendar

Be sure to check out Ouran High School Host Club when it’s released on October 28th. If you enter the giveaway, make sure to check your e-mail to see if you’re a winner.

Win an Autographed Ouran High Wall Scroll

Monday, September 8th, 2008

Comments are Closed

To celebrate the upcoming release of Ouran High in the US, I decided to buy an Ouran High wall scroll. On my way to the Walk of Fame to get it autographed I had an idea. I stopped by the dealers room and picked up another one to give away. Vic, who plays the role of Tamaki in the English dub, was kind enough to autograph them both.

The wall scroll pictured is mine, but the one I’m giving away looks the same. The only difference is that the autograph doesn’t say “To Jason!” and I think it’s on the flower on the other side. Since they were so similar I thought it best to leave the one I’m giving away wrapped up. I want to keep it safe for the lucky person who will receive it.

UPDATE: FUNimation has agreed to provide DVDs for the giveaway. So even if you don’t win the scroll, you still might have a chance to win something. /update

Since this is to celebrate the release of the English dub of Ouran High School Host Club, the giveaway will run to October 28, 2008. That’s the scheduled release date of the first half of the series.

Rules

The giveaway is open to residents of the U.S. and Canada.

One entry per person.

Use a real e-mail address. (I’ll have to contact you if you win)

The deadline to enter is October 27, 2008 at midnight. (Eastern time U.S.)

The drawing will be held on October 28, 2008.

I will E-mail you if your name is drawn.

You have 1 week to respond. If you don’t respond in that time then you’ll forfeit and someone else’s name will be drawn.

To Enter

Leave a comment on this post. Only comments on this post count.

If enough people enter I might throw in a few other surprises for those who don’t win the wall scroll. So make sure to let people know about the giveaway. It could improve your chances of getting something.

Have fun and good luck!

Technical Problems Should Now Be Solved

Monday, July 21st, 2008

Konata Izumi from Lucky Star

Yes it has been a while. If any of the regular readers are still around here’s an explanation of what happened. I feel like I owe it to you to fill you in on what caused Anime Fans Online to be down so often. Even though I’m just a writer, I feel kind of bad about it.

It seems that the old servers used by 451 Press just couldn’t keep up with the work load. A lot of us were pretty much unable to get anything done due to the sick and wheezy performance of the old things. We’d occasionally log in and try to write something only to get a message that the server was under “High Load”, but that was only the beginning. The warnings became more frequent and more frustrating. The head honcho finally had to put ‘em down. It was sad, kind of like Old Yeller.

On the bright side he’s even further in debt now. How’s that a bright side? Well, he’s in debt because he bought us some brand new hardware. From the little bit I’ve heard about our shiny new toys, it sounds like he went for the good stuff. Fast, spacious and with lots and lots of memory. Not only that he upgraded our blogging software, though I suspect that cost substantially less money. It should be a while before we start feeling more growing pains. At least hardware related ones.

Now all I have to do is get back in the groove of writing as much as possible. That is going to be tough to do after going for so long without being able to post.

Quitting Sucks

Monday, March 10th, 2008

Sanji Enjoying a Smoke.

Look at him. Mocking me. Enjoying that cigarette. Bastard! I won’t forgive you.

I hope your boat sinks.

I Quit Smoking

I’m trying to quit anyway. It’s been a couple of days now. I’m having some trouble with it though. The biggest problem I’m having is the reason I’m posting about it here at all. I’m having a lot of trouble focusing on anything. Part of my mind is always preoccupied by the thought “Where the hell are my cigarettes?”

This is about the 5th time I’ve tried to write this post. This time I’ve managed to get as far as writing a few paragraphs that are somewhat coherent. Don’t count on that continuing much longer.

I figure I’m in for at least a few more days like this before things start to get better. So the next week or two probably won’t be my best writing. I’m not even gonna try. A couple of larger posts I’ve been thinking about will have to wait. I’ll probably be posting a bit less as well. If I can’t manage to write something that meets even my low standards, I’m not going to bother posting it.

I will try to get posts up, I’m just doing my best not to let the quality suffer.

Being Sick Sucks

Friday, February 15th, 2008

I missed a couple of posts this week. I’m going to try to get back on schedule as soon as I can. I hope it will be soon. I hate being sick.

I have a few manga to write up and some anime rentals waiting for me. As soon as I’m able to concentrate on what I’m doing for more than a couple of minutes at a time I’ll get to work on those.

Internet Connection Problems

Friday, January 18th, 2008

Test Pattern. Gundam Head photo from Flickr member Seiya235 / Carter McKendry.

I’ve been having trouble from my Internet connection. It’s been randomly going out for the last few days. Most of the time it’s only unavailable for a few minutes, but Wednesday it was off for half the day.

I’m writing about this just to let you know that it could affect my posting. I was trying to work on a post earlier and it dropped me.

I’ve reported it to my ISP. Hopefully it will soon be back to the reliable service I’ve grown to expect.

What took so long?

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

Just wanted to let you know a couple things. I finally got the first 2 DVDs of Case Closed in the mail. So I can write up the review that Rechelle from Celebrity Fashion Watch requested. I’m going to try to write a thorough review. I’m thinking of using this to test out a different way to write up my reviews. We’ll see.

Case Closed, One Truth Prevails

I also wanted to let you know that I’m trying to get the posts up despite the schedule problems I’m having. I know the posts aren’t going up at the normal time, I apologize for that. I’ll try to get things back to normal as soon as possible.

I’d also like to apologize if you’ve encountered pop ups on AnimeFansOnline recently. It seems that the folks in the office at 451Press were doing some server load tests. The method they chose to do this was to put a pop up on all the sites. That sort of thing is beyond my control, but I’m still sorry about it.

Holiday Chaos

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

Sorry, but the post is going to be late today. Posts will probably be screwed up until next week. Thanksgiving is screwing up my schedule. I don’t normally write posts in advance. So when my schedule is messed up, the posting schedule gets messed up.

I’ll try to get some posts written in advance for Christmas. Otherwise I’ll probably be even worse then.

What am I missing?

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

After writing yesterday’s post I got a few comments. One response in particular caught my attention. I’d like to point it out and ask for your opinion.

rech Says:
October 24th, 2007 at 7:25 pm
I was wondering if you’ve already made a review for Detective Conan aka Case Closed… I so love that anime….:)

Reader Opinions

I told ‘em I’d try to find a couple of the DVDs and give it an in depth review.

I thought about it some more. This comment, just a simple question, made me ask myself a few things. I’d like to share some of those questions with you. Your opinions matters a lot to me.

Why haven’t I already reviewed Detective Conan/Case Closed?

There are a couple of answers to this, but the more I think about it the less they hold up. I could say it’s because it’s an older show. I’ve written about show that have been around longer, at least in the U. S., so that doesn’t work. I could say it’s because there are already lots of reviews for it online. Once again, that answer doesn’t stick. I’ve written about some pretty popular shows that have been discussed pretty much everywhere.

Should I write about older shows?

I have written about shows that aren’t really new. Most of those were new to me though. On the few occasions I wrote about an older show that I watched when it was new, there was something that prodded me into discussing it. I’m starting to think that I need to cover the older shows more often. Just because I watched Tenchi Muyo! when it was on Toonami doesn’t mean the newer fans have seen it. I’ve gotten caught. The trap was looking for things to share with my readers by discussing it with people who already know what I’m talking about.

How much of the older stuff should I start writing about?

This is the tricky bit. Should I write about older titles a certain amount each month? Should I just ignore how old something is when I’m deciding what to talk about? This is the toughest question I need to answer, and this is where I need your help. There’s a chance that I’ll be writing about things you’re already familiar with. Is that a bad thing? There’s also a chance that I’ll write about something that you missed the first time around. How often do you want to see posts and reviews of older anime and manga?

If there’s something you want to see, just ask.

I value your opinions. If you ask about something I do my best to answer. When Amber asked for some recommendations for family friendly anime I wrote a post about that. I’m sure she’s not the only parent looking for something she can enjoy with her daughter.
