I’m your little butterfly.

Anime Music Videos

Ok, maybe I’m not your little butterfly. It’s from a song. That song keeps running through my head, thanks to my g/f. She found a really good Samurai Champloo AMV and has been playing it a lot. I didn’t really have anything else I needed to write about today so I thought I’d share it. By share it I mean spread the infection to as many people as possible.

If you’re at work when you read this crank up the volume and bug everyone around you.

Anime: Samurai Champloo
Song: Butterfly

AMVs are like potato chips, you can’t have just one. Here’s another one that’ll get stuck in your head. The song is kind of similar to the butterfly song above. It’s the opening to Ouran High School Host Club with a different song. It’s kind of freaky the way the song and the opening sync up. I’ve heard that The Wizard of Oz syncs up with the Pink Floyd album Dark Side of the Moon. I haven’t tried that, but I’d imagine it would be something like this.

Take a look and see if you agree.

Anime: Ouran High School Host Club
Song: Bumblebee

Just to give you an idea of how well it fits, here’s the real opening to Ouran High School Host Club.

Ouran High School Host Club Clean Opening

The more AMVs I see the more I want to try making one. Know of any really good video editing software that’s free to download? I don’t mean warez, I’m looking for freeware. You know, something legal.

Have you made any AMVs? Do you have any suggestions or tips on making them?

Negi Springfield is going live.

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

I love the Negima manga. The anime is pretty good too. Now there’s going to be even more Negima to check out. Yep, live action Negima. It looks like all the characters are going to be there too. It is a good thing though? I’m not so sure.

I’ve got nothing against live action versions of anime or manga. You might remember my write up about the newest Cutey Honey TV show. Live action can be great, or it can be horrible. Just look at some of the comic books movies that have come out of Hollywood in the last few years.

When you decide to do something like this there are some very important decisions that have to be made. Will it try to mimic the visual style of the manga or anime, or will it try to make it look more realistic. What characters and story elements will you focus on? Will you change the sex of the title character?

Wait… what?

These are the questions that makers of the live action Negima may have asked. At least it seems that way looking at the trailer.

Raise your hand if you think Negi looks like a chick cosplaying Harry Potter.

That’s the problem. It looks like a cosplay group made this. Most of the casting looks way off. Sure, I can see how Chachamaru would be a problem, but she’s not the only one. C’mon, at least cast a few of the main characters right.

All that said, I’d still watch it. It is Negima after all.

Anime and comedy, together in AMV Comedians.

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

I was looking at AMVs on Youtube and came across some pretty good stuff. These stand out because they aren’t set to music. These videos are set to stand up comedy. There are several more, but I picked my favorite AMVs. Not necessarily my favorite comedians, but these are funny.

The anime used is mostly Naruto, though there are others. If you enjoy these I’d highly recommend checking out the rest of them on Youtube.

Comedians posted.

  • Dave Chappelle
  • Mitch Hedberg
  • (Ok, so he is one of my favorite comedians.)

  • Dane Cook
  • Pablo Francisco

Warning: NSFW. These videos contain coarse language.

Do not click this link if comedy offends you.

7 Great AMVs.

Monday, August 13th, 2007

I thought I’d share some of my favorite AMVs from Youtube with you today. I really should add a category for these. I’ve really been getting into ‘em lately.

Best 80s mashup.
This is one of my favorites. It’s very close to perfect.

Best use of a single anime.
I love this one. It takes Bleach and really tells the story of the song. Great song too.

Most satirical use of The Vapors song Turning Japanese
Turning Japanese is used in a lot of AMVs. I like this one because of the show used. This version of Teen Titans is very heavily influenced by anime.

Best otaku culture AMV. (missed cosplayers though)
I like this one because of the range of visuals used. They don’t always work perfectly with the song though.

Best mod to someone else’s AMV.
I’m sure the original is an awesome AMV. I know this one is.

Most misattributed song on YouTube.
It’s not a Weird Al song. He even says so on his MySpace page.

Most accurate AMV.
This one is by Weird Al. Freaky accurate song. Don’t believe me? Check out Astrology Explored. I’m a Capricorn BTW.

Drawing lessons on YouTube.

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

There comes a time in every anime or manga fan’s life when they decide to try doing some fan art. I’ve drawn quite a bit myself. It was mostly Marvel characters for me when I was younger. Unless you’re already pretty darn good at drawing, you might need some tips. There are lots of tutorials on the net.

YouTube is a good place to find information on visual mediums such as drawing and painting. There are lot’s of drawing tutorials on youtube. I’m not saying these are the best ones, but they’re pretty good.

How to Draw Tutorial Part 1 of 2
This one has some good advice about building your figure. Good use of foundation drawing.

How To Draw A Manga/Anime Girl (With Spoken Explanation)
This is a video from author/illustrator Mark Crilley. Advice from a professional is always nice.

If you liked those, click the links and check out some more tutorials. There’s some good stuff on youtube along with the crap.

Hikaru Utada to sing theme for new Rebuild of Evangelion.

Friday, June 29th, 2007

That the word from Anime News Network. I might have to see this series just for that. Hikaru Utada has a beautiful voice. If there were a chance I’d import any music from Japan, Hikaru Utada would be at the top of the list. In case you haven’t heard her sing, here are a few clips of Simple and Clean. Simple and Clean is the theme to Kingdom Hearts, one of my favorite games. It’s an incredible song.

Simple and Clean Remix.
This is the opening to Kingdom Hearts. This is an AMV of the remix using visuals from the Kingdom Hearts games. This version is much more upbeat than he original song.

Simple and Clean Live.
Here’s an appearance by Hikaru Utada on a show that looks similar to VH1’s Storytellers.

Simple and Clean AMV
This is the regular English version set to visuals from the Kingdom Hearts games.

Little late today.

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

This post is a bit later than normal. I was playing around with graphics for the banner contest on WatchingHouse. I think it turned out pretty well, but I forgot the .com so it’s not likely to win.

One day down on the contest I’m running, and no comments at all. That’s disapointing, but I guess it’ll save me $50 if no one leaves a comment. What am I talking about? I’d probably spend the money on J-Box myself. There are a few things over there I’ve had my eye on.

I was going to write up my impressions of a couple of manga I’d read recently, but since it’s so late I’m just going to post a couple of classic AMV. An AMV is where someone edits together some anime to make a music video. I’ll cover AMVs in a future Otaku Lesson. On to the youtube goodness.

AMV Hell 1 Time:05:16

AMV Hell 2: Son of AMV Hell Time:05:00

AMV Hell 3 Time:01:08:52
Yes, this one is over an hour long. Might want to go to the restroom and grab a snack before you start watching it. You could also go to youtube and watch it in parts.

Made to hit in America.

Beck is gonna be old news to some, but I have to post about this anime. It’s incredible. The first episode started kinda slow, but halfway through the second one I was hooked. Beck tells the story of Tanaka Yukio, known as Koyuki, who discovers the world of music. Not that background noise some like to call music. Real music. Songs that crawl into your skull and call it home. Kinda like the theme to the show, which I have conveniently placed below.

Seeing Koyuki falling in love with music can make you fall in love with it too. His love is infectious.(Ewww) As his passion blooms he seeks out others who feel the same way. Not always successfully. Eventually he finds himself a few friends he can talk music with. It all leads to learning to play guitar. His life focuses on learning, becoming the best he can be. He dedicates his life to six strings.

What’s a young man with newfound guitar skills to do? Join a band of course. Lucky for Koyuki that his friend Ryusuke has bee putting one together during the last few episodes. The other members aren’t really convinced until they hear Koyuki sing. Turns out his real talent is vocals, even though his instrumental abilities are pretty darn good.

I haven’t seen the whole thing yet, so I can’t give you a full account of the story. I’m trying not to do that anyway. You need to check this one out for yourself. It’s no action flick, so don’t expect a fast pace. It is worth watching though.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go watch the opening theme 15 or 20 more times.

Paprika videos

Saturday, June 2nd, 2007

There seems to be quite a bit of buzz surrounding Paprika, and with good reason. If you’ve seen any other anime by Satoshi Kon, you know we’re gonna get something special. Here are a couple of youtube videos that back up all the talk.

Paprika English subtitled trailer.

No subtitles, but a good look at the art.

Spoiler Warning. The following is an English sub of three minutes of the movie. If you want to wait and see the whole thing, don’t watch this one.
