You must be my Lucky Star
Lucky Star is your basic anime about school girls. While it may not be the most original anime to come along, it’s still very good. The show follows four friends. Konata, an athletic girl who’d rather play an MMO or watch anime than do her homework. I’m sure we can all relate to that. Miyuki, a smart and soft spoken young lady. Tsukasa, a sweetheart who’s easily distracted. Kagami, responsible and hard working, is very different from her twin sister Tsukasa.

More characters are going to be introduced later I believe, for now these four girls are the main focus of the show.
The show follows the four girls in their daily lives. It relies on the characters personalities for the entertainment. Lucky for us the interaction is entertaining. For example, being an anime and gaming fan is expensive so Kanata gets a job to help pay for a convention. Makes sense doesn’t it? The entertaining part is that she gets a job as a waitress in a cosplay cafe. Kagami seems to have a problem with it, since it’s basically Otaku Hooters. Kanata doesn’t seem to mind, she gets to cosplay and make money for her anime habit.

Azumanga is
one of the best
made anime about
girls in high school…
It’s tempting to compare a show to others like it. The closest anime I can compare Lucky Star to would have to be Azumanga Daioh. I hate to say it, but it suffers when compared to such a great anime. Azumanga is one of the best made anime about girls in high school, so it’s unfair to compare it to anything. I’d bet Azumanga also had a much larger budget, and that could be one of the reasons Lucky Star doesn’t measure up. Azumanga Daioh had beautiful art and amazing stories. Lucky Star just can’t compete. The art is average, the stories are serviceable. I’ve only seen a handful of episodes, so the stories could improve later on. Even with that lopsided comparison, I still like Lucky Star. It’s definitely worth checking out
There are a couple more characters who are very important. The host of Lucky Channel Akira Kogami and her assistant Minoru Shiraishi. Shiraishi appears on the regular show as a, sometimes speaking, extra. Akira just hosts the Lucky Channel show at the end of every episode. Lucky Channel may be my favorite part. Akira’s personality can change at the drop of a hat. She can go from a super-kawaii little girl full of energy to a very cynical world-weary Idol very quickly. No wonder Shiraishi is so nervous.
Even the closing credits are worth watching. It’s just the door to a karaoke room where Konata, Tsukasa, Kagami and Miyuki are hanging out and having fun. We hear the conversation going on inside. We also hear the singing. It’s very funny and reveals a bit about the characters. I love Konata’s song choices.
There doesn’t seem to be any deep and meaningful message this show is trying to get across. That’s ok with me, I like it anyway.
If this becomes licensed I’ll definitely buy it.
