Otaku Lessons
If you’ve been reading the blog you may have noticed a new category, Otaku Lessons. Since I wrote the article about fansubs I’ve been thinking. Some people may lose interest in anime if things get too confusing. I hope to help people get past the initial learning period as painlessly as possible.
I’ve decided to write some articles that may help people just getting into anime and manga. It’s meant to help people learn the things we all pick up after a while. That’s why I created the category. I also wrote the hentai/ecchi article with that in mind. I hope to write many more articles like those. The only problem is figuring out what a new fan needs to know.
I’ll need your help. If you can think of something that would help someone new to this wonderful world, please suggest it. Can you remember when you learned something about anime that made it all make sense? What was it? Did you see an anime that really hooked you, something that made you want to see more anime? Which one?
Are you new to anime or manga? Is there something you don’t quite understand? Just curious about something? Please tell me what you’d like to know. Someone else may need the same info. This way you can learn and we can both help others.
If you can think of anything that can help new fans, please leave a comment or use the contact form to e-mail me.
If there are more fans of anime, then more anime will be made. I think we all want that.

Wow! I think this a great idea! The cultures of Japan and the US are so similar in some ways, and yet wildly different is so many others. But at the same time, anime and manga are wonderful, entertaining ways to gently expose yourself to this diverse culture.
For me, anime was just a natural progression from the cartoons I loved so much. I can’t think of one specific title that hooked me. But I remember which ones got me to start reading manga….that was Azumanga Daioh and Cowboy Bebop. Both are amazing and I wanted more…more depth, more stories, anything I could get and along the way I realized that manga is fantastic as well! But honestly, reading it can be a little tricky for the beginner.
I think explaining that would be helpful. I was terribly confused the first time I read a manga. I started at the end, luckily it was a Toyoko Pop book and it explained the proper way to read manga.
Sorry to be so lengthy but this is an exciting topic! For me, I think it would be helpful to discuss the different categories of anime, it’s easier to find other things you like once you find a niche you enjoy. Explain manga vs american comics. And lastly, the food that associated with anime, particularly pocky! Discovering that has been so much fun for me! I hope all this helps and sorry again for being so long-winded!

Yeah reading manga published in the original right to left flow can be tricky, at least in the beginning. I’ll probably include that if I do a comparison between American style comics and manga.
An article about the different types would probably be helpful. There’s a lot there, I might have to do a series where I focus on one or two kinds per post.
I was thinking about doing an article on otaku snacks. Maybe with a contest. Thinking about giving away a gift certificate to a site with a good snack selection.
Thanks for the suggestions. Keep reading the blog and you’ll probably see some of those articles.
