Saturday Morning Cartoons
I was thinking about the blog and it hit me. It’s Saturday morning.
When I was growing up Saturdays were a weekly cartoon holiday. You knew what you’d be doing. Sitting in front of the tv until noon, or until whatever hated cartoon killing non-animated show came on signaling the end of ink and paint nirvana.
Sure there were kids that slept through some of it and only caught a couple hours of animated bliss. Then there were kids like me. I got up early on Saturday, not always as early as I wanted to. I’d get at least a solid four hours in. My goal was six. Yes six wonderful hours in front of the tv. Oh the networks didn’t really start until 8 a.m., but the local channels would. Nothing new, just older cartoons. Loony Toons, Scooby Doo and maybe some super heroes to pass the time. I’d sit there half asleep and watch those, waiting for the new ones.
I’m sure a lot of the ones I remember best probably weren’t on together. The lineups have all kind of faded together. Gummy Bears, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Kid Video, Captain N: The Game Master, and Ghostbusters (the movie ones, not the rip off with hat wearing gorilla).
I love animation. If there was a cartoon on, I’d watch it. For me, Saturday mornings were perfect. I can still tell you who dunnit for just about every episode of Scooby Doo, and I can still sing the entire theme to the Gummy Bears.
What about you? What animated shows do you remember? Do you still love them?

Saturday morning cartoons are a dying ritual … unfortunately, unless you have cable, Saturday morning cartoons are not on anymore. They have been dying off the past few years, and I for one miss them very much.
Don’t remember too much about my Saturday morning cartoon faves when I was younger, but I do remember loving He-Man reruns after school. In my 20s we used to drag ourselves out of bed, usually a little hungover, whenever there was a new Batman cartoon on. I still remember the one where Harley Quinn tries to tempt the Joker with that pie … definitely not a kid’s cartoon, but I loved it.

Yeah, they’re all but gone now. I just don’t understand it. Why are news programs on Saturday? What is it about that day of the week that makes the networks want to imitate CNN?
Is that the Batman cartoon that looks like a 1940s gangster movie? That is my favorite Batman cartoon. I believe Harley was actually introduced on that show. Just goes to show you that they knew what they were doin’. They created a character that fit perfectly into Batman’s world.

I think that Saturday morning cartoons aren’t the big deal they once were simply because we have access to so many cartoons in so many places now. I mean, we have entire channels and networks devoted to cartoons. Back in the bad, old days saturday mornings and the occasional afternoon show were the only ways kids could see cartoons. I still love my Saturday morning cartoons but I also love all things like Cartoon network, Boomerang, and of course, anime!
