School Rumble Manga Volume 1
After the serious post yesterday I thought I’d try to lighten the mood a bit. If anything can it’s School Rumble. From reading the info page about the creator, Jin Kobayashi, you might expect School Rumble to be an action packed super macho anime. It’s not. It’s a very sweet romantic comedy.
Then again, so is Tenma.
Story
Second year high school student Tsukamoto Tenma is in love with Karasuma Ôji. Why is kind of unclear. He’s a goofy lookin’ dude that keeps to himself. Love is weird. Then again, so is Tenma. She tries time and again to tell him of her feelings. Somehow she always messes it up.
Tenma isn’t alone though. Harima Kenji is in a similar situation. He’s a juvenile delinquent who can’t seem to confess his love for the goofiest girl in school. Tenma! Yes, it’s our old friend the love triangle. Back again to screw up lives and keep us laughing. Love triangle, what would we do without you?
Characters
In a manga like this the single most important things are the characters. If they’re badly done, you don’t care about the story at all. Lucky for us the characters are great. Notice I didn’t say believable? That’s because believable real world characters wouldn’t work in a story like this. It’s heavy on the comedy. Realistic characters would make you feel bad instead of laughing when things go so horribly wrong for them.
Art
The art is good. This guy has some range. Watery-eyed shojo panels, exaggerated comedic expressions and gritty action sequences, this guy can do ‘em all. He does ‘em well too. I’m looking forward to seeing an action manga by Jin Kobayashi. I love the way the action is drawn in School Rumble. I like the way most things are drawn in School Rumble.
Is it worth it?
School Rumble is most definitely worth it. It’s an amazingly good comedy about love in high school. I recommend it. The manga that is, not falling in love in high school. Falling in love in high school just painful, I don’t recommend that at all.
