Wild Ones Manga Volume 1
Rakuto is given the task of looking after Sachi. That’s gonna be a challenge for both of them.
Wild Ones by Kiyo Fujiwara is a pretty interesting manga. I read part of it in Shojo Beat a while back. My girlfriend got a copy of the book in her Christmas stocking and she was nice enough to let me read it.
Story
Sachi Wakamura was 15 years old when her mother died leaving her all alone, or so Sachi thought. The grandfather she never knew showed up just as she was wondering what she was going to do. Sachi then moves in with her grandfather Raizo Asagi and some things begin to make sense. Like some of her mother’s attitudes about deceit, and why she never knew her grandfather.
Her grandfather is the head of a yakuza clan, so Sach is going to need a bodyguard. That’s where Rakuto Igarashi comes in. He’s a member of Raizo’s clan and about the same age as Sachi. Rakuto is given the task of looking after Sachi. That’s gonna be a challenge for both of them.
Art
I really like the art in Wild Ones. The character design is pretty good, especially the yakuza members. It would be easy enough to have a few general “thug” characters and the story would still work. That’s not how it’s done in Wild Ones. The gang are all characters of their own. That’s a nice touch.
My Opinion
You might be tempted to compare Sachi Wakamura to Tohru Honda from Fruits Basket, I thought like that to start with too. After all, they’re in a similar situation at the beginning of their stories. They’ve both lost their moms and find themselves in a new home that is very strange to them. I don’t think that would be fair to Sachi though. Sachi has a different kind of strength. I can make this comparison though, Wild Ones is just as good as Fruits Basket.

Wild Ones is a very sweet family story. Sachi goes from thinking that she’s all alone in the world to having a home where there are a lot of people who care for her very much. She doesn’t really realize that at first. She’s a very lucky girl.
Is it worth it?
Yep, Wild Ones is worth it. It has good art and a nice story. If my girlfriend doesn’t keep buying them I probably will.
